  • 1878—1958: Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon. His outstanding works are Badhira Vilapam, Bandhanasthanaya Anirudhan, Oru Katha, Sishyanum Makanum, Magdalana Mariyam, Kochu Sita, Achanum Makalum, Sahitya Manjari, etc. He also translated Valmiki Ramayana and Rig Veda into Malayalam. Vallathol's efforts resulted in the revival of the art of Kathakali.

  • 25 Jul 1950: Formation of Pala Diocese, Kottayam. Though the diocese is young, some of its churches trace their origin to the earlier centuries.
10 1954 
  • 1954: 'Neelakkuyil', often considered as the first authentic Malayali movie, was released. It captured national interest by winning the President's silver medal. It was scripted by the renown Malayalam novelist Uroob and directed by P. Bhaskaran and Ramu Kariat.

  • 1 Nov 1956: Inauguration of the State of Kerala. Malabar District was merged with Tranvancore-Cochin state and Kasargod taluk of South Kanara District to form the State of Kerala.

  • 5 Apr 1957: First elected Communist government in Kerala
13 1962 
  • 3 Jul 1962: Since the beginning of the Syro-Malabar church, its liturgy was in Syriac and went through Latinization like many other churches in the 16th century. As a movement for better understanding of the liturgical rites, a restored Eucharistic liturgy, drawing on the original East Syrian sources, was approved by Pope Pius XII in 1957 and for the first time on the feast of St. Thomas on July 3, 1962, the vernacular, Malayalam, was introduced for the celebration of the Syro-Malabar rite Mass.

  • 1975—1977: Indira Gandhi declares state of emergency after being found guilty of electoral malpractice. Nearly 1,000 political opponents imprisoned and programme of compulsory birth control introduced.

  • 12 Feb 1976: Commercial operation of the Idukki Power Station was commissioned
19 1985 
  • 1 Jan 1985: Television broadcasting in Kerala was started by the Doordarshan, the official television channel of the government of India.
20 1998 
  • 11 May 1998: India carries out its second nuclear tests, Pokhran-II
21 2000 
  • May 2000: India marks the birth of its billionth citizen
22 2004 
  • 26 Dec 2004: Indian Ocean Tsunami, killing about 230,000 people in eleven countries, including about 18,000 from India. The tsunami was triggered due to an earthquake of magnitude ~9.1 in the Indian Ocean, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
23 2008 
  • 12 Oct 2008: Sr. Alphonsa canonized as Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at Vatican. St. Alphonsa from Bharananganam, Kottayam became the second person of Indian origin (first person with both parents Indians) to be canonized as saint by the Catholic Church.
