living statues of padova

Apart from the living statues, the above 2 photographs have something in common. The first one has a toy-dog in it, and the second one has a toy dog in it [toy dogs are very small dogs which people keep as pets]. The toy-dog in the first one is guarding the collected money. The 2nd one is merely passing by, in front of a Giorgio Armani shop, and appears funny with one of his front legs in the air 😀 Click on the images for a larger version.

No posts in a while? I’ve seen such living statues in San Francisco. They are amazing, how still they can be. There’s also one guy there who has a large bush in his hand behind which he sits and jumps out at people. It’s always funny how people react to it. The last photo is especially good!

This is the latest post 😉 Interesting to know about the performers from your side!

Nice pottery you have done Bindu. Inspiring. Would like to see some pictures and instructions on how you make them too!

Beautiful still shots.. or rather they stood still for you beautifully! 😛
Jokes apart, nice captures and interesting that those dogs are called toy-dogs.. :O
And totally loved the last one. amazing composition.

  4. Andy says:

Wow I could never stand still for that long! They are very dedicated. Great series.

  5. Kanak says:

Never seen anything like this before! Great shots of the ‘statues’. And glad you included the toy dog in your post!

  6. Indrani says:

    Great shots.
Nice perspective in the last shot.

    Well taken snaps 🙂

When Westerners do things they do it in style. Even when they beg 🙂

am seeing this the first time!

imagine standing thus for hours and hours….

  9. Interesting pics. Hmmm if in India, they use this strategy where will politicians make their statues :p

P.S there is an uncompleted story in my blog, see if you can give your finishing touch to it 🙂 title: Journey of life.

I have been always shy of taking these pictures not sure if it is mandatory to tip if you click a picture. What do you say? Have seen this in Oxford too.

    • rocksea says:

hey mridula, whenever possible we pay these street artists and the musicians a small amount and ask them if it is ok to take some photographs. many are usually happy about it.

Saw some on streets of SFO who put some act to earn money. These pictures look awesome.

    • rocksea says:

hey solilo, thanks 🙂 what is SFO?

      • Deeps says:

San Fransisco, right,Sols?? SFO is the airport code for the city.
Oops, the travel agent in me just got carried away! Couldnt help sneaking into this comment-thread 😀

Amazing images. Although I’m feeling a bit bad for the living statues who have been made to stand still for such long hours. Hats off to them!

        • rocksea says:

ya should be! grazie Deeps 🙂

It is usual to see these living statues at all cities in Italy, and around Europe too. It is a wonder how they get so much endurance to stand through. Probably the necessity to survive..

cute shots … and i cant help but nod in agreement with nisha’s comment. begging is the worst way to make money

  13. Its common here in the streets of Dublin as well. There was a guy who made up himself into Barack Obama the other week and was grabbing a lot of attention from the curious passerby’s..

And I’ve heard this is a common thing on the boulevards of Hollywood to dress up akin to the famous characters on siverscreen. The artists sure put a lot of effort into it as evidenced by that golden statue up there in your gallery.

    Nice shots…

    • rocksea says:

yes the golden living statue had tried to do it to perfection… with golden hues over his face too… i guess the tourists usually sense the efforts put by the artists and they tend to ay accordingly.

  14. Nisha says:

These scenes always fascinate me. it’s common in many countries. I think this is a better & noble way to earn a few bucks instead of begging. I wonder why people in India haven’t thought abt it. 🙂

    • rocksea says:

like lakshmi pointed out in his comment, the political beggers have already thought about it and making real statues around the country!

      • Raja says:

I don’t agree to that. There are places in India too where this is practiced. I found this on the streets of koti, Hyderabad. Also in a few places in Tamil Nadu, people dress up as mythological characters and wait. But this is not respected. The reasons are variable. He he

i would be in soooo much pain standing still, even just standing lol neat shots tho!!!
